A Situation We Can No Longer Ignore

Are you aware of what’s going on in Africa? Of any of the many many bad things that are happening? For too long western countries have stood by and acted like we can’t get involved in any African affairs, but how are we supposed to know that if we don’t know what’s going on?

Unfortunately the situations in many countries in Africa are rapidly getting worse and yet we do nothing about it.

In Nigeria SARS, the anti robbery protection squad continues to arrest people off the street without reason, Beating, Raping and killing them. This special police force unit targets people based on what they are wearing, if they have an iPhone and if they have any tattoos or piercings. The arrests are uncalled for, unnecessary and extremely cruel. For years now people have been calling for the defunding of SARS holding protests and signing petitions but the Nigerian government does nothing, this needs to change. In Libya there are people being sold into slavery. Across the northern countries in Africa there are people trying to leave and emigrate to Europe to get out of poor living, economic and political conditions. These people are trying to do everything they can to get to Europe and to make a better life for themselves, even paying to be smuggled across the Mediterranean. Many of these smugglers are taking the migrants hostage and selling them to laborers for as little as 150 dollars USD. These people are being held hostage and sold for money, just while trying to make a better life for themselves. All investigations by the Libyan government have come up inconclusive, but still thousands of people are moved through this trading system every year and we do nothing. We need to raise awareness to end this slave trade once and for all.

In the Dominican Republic of Congo 35,000 children are forced to work in Cobalt mines, working up to 14 hours a day. These children are overworked, underpaid, and often starved. The mining shafts and tunnels that these kids are forced to work in are incredibly unsafe, and many accidents lead to extreme injuries and even death. The exploitation of these kids will only continue to increase as the demand for cobalt, the material needed to make rechargeable lithium batteries, rises. Surely there is a better way for cobalt to be mined, without endangering these children.

Throughout Ethiopia and central Africa the Amhara people, an indigenous people native to the region, are experiencing a mass genocide. Since 2017 over a million Amhara people have gone missing, and after investigations, found dead. The Amhara people are facing the end of their lineage because of ethnic cleansing in the area, and that is unjust. We can’t stand to the side and let this genocide continue.

These people shouldn’t have to suffer when proper investigations could be going on to stop them. We can no longer stand aside and act as if the problems that the countries of Africa are facing are not problems worth facing. We have to stand up and fight this, together.
