So, election day, 2020. Arguably one of, if not, the most important elections in the history of the United States. It would seem, no matter the outcome this year, red or blue, America will not quite be getting the president it needs most.
This 2020 election has been in the running for nearly a year now, or depending on how you look at it, since the 2016 election. Now, since the primaries last March we have seen many dramatic changes in candidates, especially now as things are really coming down to the wire.
As time ticks down to election day we really should look over our two main competitors for this election, former vice president Joe Biden and President Donald Trump. These two disagree on everything from climate change to foreign policy.
So, if there isn’t one clear front runner of these polls, how do we know what to expect on Tuesday?
Well, first of all we won’t really know who won the election potentially even until January, because mail in ballots could take weeks to arrive. That's what they’ve been telling us.
Unfortunately we are just finding out that some stations we’re sending our ballots to are refusing to count ballots that arrive after election day, even if the send date is from before. There are people who requested their ballots weeks ago, in preparation to get them in on time have not even received them yet.
It is 2020, and there are still people who are not being able to exercise their right to vote.
So, let's say the vote is really close, close enough to the point where it looks like something could have been counted wrong.
If that happens, where Biden wins the election and is set to be inaugurated in January, there is a possibility, or, lets say most likely, Trump will try to make a big stink about it, claiming that it was a mistake- of course it’s possible that this would happen either way- and so this will be taken to the supreme court.
Now, as I covered in another article, the supreme court, as of the swearing in of Amy Coney Barrett the Supreme court is 6 to 3 conservative, in favor of the republicans, and so almost automatically it would work out in Trump's favor, giving him another 4 years in office.
Now, this could entail many things, especially with the judicial branch locked in with the executive branch.
Already, the problem of re-illegalizing same sex marriage and legalization of conversion therapy in the states that already illegalized it, will be brought up for debate soon after the election. With Trump and our current supreme court in power both of these will move forward, further locking away the long fought for rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.
It seems that in just about every situation from there on out the rights that had slowly been granted to woman, people of color and LGBTQIA+, being rolled back, one at a time, until we end up back in the 1890s.
Vote while you can, while you still have time, so that those of us who can’t, have a secure future.
