The Issue With SARS

SARS, Nigeria’s Special Anti Robbery Squad, ever heard of it? No? Well maybe it’s time that you did.

The Special Anti Robbery Squad was established in Nigeria in 1992 to help lower the rate of crime dealing with robbery and firearms. Since it’s beginning SARS has been known to use unnecessary violence in its business. People are stopped in the street because of what they are wearing, what kind of phone they are using, or the way their hair is styled. SARS officers have taken innocent people into custody, despite having done nothing against the law, and torturing them. Often times raping and even executing the prisoners, all around violating human rights.

From January 2017 to May 2020 there have been over 82 reports of death from this brutality, not to mention the other non reported crimes.

In 2017 Nigerians began to protest the injustices done onto them by SARS, these protests continuing until now, where we are finally beginning to see a rise in awareness of police brutality around the world. Now, as people are beginning to grow bored of this movement, we still scramble to keep this spark going, and to keep fighting.

If we are going to be fighting for racial justice you cannot simply mean in your own country. Fight for these freedoms around the world and keep this movement going damn it! We will not give in, and we will not go down without a fight.
